GARY OWEN BUNCH
Gary Bunch, 86, died December 11, 2024, comfortable, at home
He was born on a kitchen table in New Toronto to Adam Bunch and Margaret Butcher in 1938. After initially dropping out of high school and working as everything from a pin boy to a truck driver, he went on to earn his doctorate and dedicate his life to education. He spent his career as a teacher, author, administrator at the Ontario Schools for the Deaf, and a York University professor. As a leading champion of inclusive education, he fought for the rights of children with disabilities to be educated in regular classrooms – both in Ontario and around the world. He was heavily involved with the Marsha Forest Centre and Inclusion Press, and was an advocate for literacy working with Frontier College and the Beat the Street Literacy Program.
In his free time, he especially enjoyed reading a good book, Christmas Eve with his loved ones, sharing family history with his children, steak and kidney pie, golf and squash with friends, and was an avid baseball fan since the days when he’d sneak over the fence at old Maple Leaf Stadium.
Gary is survived by his wife, Diana Massey; his first wife, Noelle Walsh; his children, Martin, Mary, Matthew, Becky, Adam and Megan and their partners; and his grandchildren, Emily, Lauren, Nicholas, Salem, Kade, Rosemary, and Mackenzie.
His family would like to thank the team at Dorothy Ley Hospice, the expert nursing from SE Health, and the social workers from Baycrest who led a wonderful caregivers’ support group.
Donations may be made to Dorothy Ley Hospice or the Marsha Forest Centre.
A commemoration of Gary’s life will be held in the spring, in the backyard he loved.

Five Decades of partnership
After nearly five decades as friends and colleagues, we are sorry to announce that Gary Bunch has passed peacefully at home on Dec. 11, 2024.
Gary worked his way into and through university – eventually becoming a full professor. He was captured by the complexity of hearing impairments – and was the principal of the Milton School for the Deaf. At York University he met Marsha Forest and a relentless partnership of advocacy of inclusion began. Gary taught, crafted materials and books. Always looking for ‘another way, he created PlayFair Teams – to create education and supports for all students in regular classrooms. His leadership has been international. He has been a resource in many countries, including major contributions in India and Russia where his books are the first Inclusion books translated into Russian for their universities. He was also the founding Chair of the Marsha Forest Centre and later the Chair Emeritus.
