Description

Every city in the world has a population of people who live on the streets. Many of us “pass them by.” Gary Bunch decided to collect the writings of teenagers affiliated with the Beat the Street Literacy Program. The book also describes the SCIL* (student centered individualized learning) approach to teaching reading and writing based on the 3 R’s of Respect, Reality and Relationships. A 33 page introduction to Beat the Street is followed by 60 pages of moving poetry by students who thought they couldn’t read and write. This is 101 pages of inspiration for those working in challenging circumstances.

* SCIL was developed by Jack and Marsha and team at Frontier College during their years there.

Audience:
People working with high risk students in schools or community based programs. Anyone interested in reading and writing programs that are student centered.
People working with young adults or adult populations.
